Support for the Ukrainian Association of Translators and Interpreters (UATI)

 

In the spirit of solidarity and to show support to our counterpart translators and interpreters throughout the world who may be going through hard times, ATIA has been reaching out to sister associations and groups in different countries to raise awareness by inviting speakers or seeing how we may help some of these groups. On International Translation Day, ATIA invited retired Army Major Susan French to speak about her experience in Afghanistan working with Afghani translators and cultural facilitators. This month, with the situation in the Ukraine escalating and impacting translators and interpreters caught in the war zone, ATIA reached out to the Ukrainian Association of Translators and Interpreters (UATI) with a gesture of support during this most difficult time of war; ATIA would like to thank our secretary, Ksenia Lena Maryniak for bringing this cause to our attention. Please note that ATIA is an apolitical non-for-profit association and that any show of support and solidarity is entirely humanitarian.

It is incredibly important for ATIA and our sister organizations to support our professional colleagues’ association in Ukraine in their time of need. As a gesture of support to translator colleagues in Ukraine, the ATIA Board resolved at the April 2022 board meeting to provide the Ukrainian Association of Translators and Interpreters (UATI) with a monetary donation that would cover the membership fees of its 60 members for one year. This payment was made on April 23, 2022 to the UATI Support Fund.

The UATI was legally established at a founding general meeting in February 2020, which approved and registered its charter as a non-profit society in Kyiv, Ukraine. In 2020 the UATI also joined the international federation of translation organizations—FIT.
