Certified Translator / Certified Interpreter: Have passed the national certification
process. They have successfully completed the certification exam set by the Canadian
Translators, Terminologists and Interpreter Council (CTTIC) or submitted a large body
of their work to an evaluation committee.
Associate Translator / Associate Interpreter: Translators with limited experience or
training that will challenge the CTTIC certification exam in the future.
Born in Guatemala City, Central America. Graduated in Guatemala City as a Lawyer and Notary Public (1985) and still active in the Guatemalan Bar Association. Completed the program of "Interpreting for the Justice Sector" at Bow Valley College in 2005 (3 months, FT Program). Two years of Junior College in USA (1965-1967). Post Graduate studies in Environmental Law at the University of Calgary (2001-2002). Has been an Associate Member of ATIA for 13 years as a Court Interpreter and currently a Certified Court Interpreter and Certified Community Interpreter member of ATIA. Is an associate translator of ATIA EN-ES. Has worked as a Court Interpreter for the Calgary Provincial and Regional Courts in the Criminal, Traffic, Youth and Family Law areas for 13 years, completing more than 1,500 hours of interpretation at the Courts and Law Firms. Has also worked in Medical Interpretation sessions.
"My combination of languages is English-Spanish and viceversa and I am fully bilingual . I speak, read and write both languages. Have taken numerous courses in English, interpretation techniques, Code of Conduct, and travel to my native country Guatemala at least every year and a half where part of my trip is to keep a high level of Spanish, speaking, writing and reading."
Completed a 2 month course at Bow Valley College in Academic English Writing (July-August 2018).
Has been working as an interpreter since June 2017 at Calgary International Airport with the Canadian Border Services Agency.
Has participated in more than 25 professional development activities including seminars, workshops and formal training in interpretation for different sectors of government and private entities.
Currently the Vice President of ATIA for the year period 2020 for the region of southern Alberta.
