An Overview of the Canadian Court System
This webinar is an overview of the Canadian Court System and the different courts where court interpreters typically work. It will provide an understanding of the stucture for the Provincial Court, the Court of Queen’s Bench and the regular courts. We will discuss the terminology used in the Domestic Violence Court and the need for participants to begin translating this vocabulary of legal terms into their own language.
Carmen Aguilera, is a Certified Court Interpreter and Certified Community Interpreter for English to Spanish and Spanish to English. She is a member of ATIA (The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta). Carmen has thirteen years experience in Calgary as a court/legal interpreter in criminal, traffic, youth and family courts; including mediations, discoveries and questionings at law firms. She has been an Interpreter for Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) since June 2017.
Attorney at law and notary public, Carmen graduated in Guatemala. She worked for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) mission to Guatemala, as a project coordinator for programs created to improve the administration of justice system with the judicial branch and Supreme Court of Justice. She was appointed Minister Counsellor for the Embassy of Guatemala in Ottawa, Canada and later transferred to the Embassy of Guatemala in Washington, D.C., USA
