To become an associate member of ATIA, you must pass the examination process for EITHER Interpreters OR Translators.
After you become an associate member, you can write the examinations for other membership categories or language combinations.
Associate-level examinations are held in Edmonton and Calgary twice per year (Spring/Fall) with registration deadlines of January 10 and (tba due to Covid-19)
Step 1: Attend the mandatory Information Session for all examination registrants (held on a Saturday morning in January and July).
Step 2: Pass the prerequisite examinations (held in March and September). All candidates must pass ATIA’s Code of Ethics examination. Translators must pass an English Proficiency Examination.
Step 3: Translators who pass the Code of Ethics examination and the English Proficiency Examination will write the Translation examination (in the language combination confirmed after the Information Session). Interpreters who pass the Code of Ethics examination will then submit their Application Form (see links to specific forms here).
ATIA holds the national certification examinations (CTTIC) twice a year and ATIA members are notified of the dates.
