Exam/Process Information

To become an associate member of ATIA, you must pass the examination process for EITHER Interpreters OR Translators.

After you become an associate member, you can write the examinations for other membership categories or language combinations.

Associate-level examinations are held online a minimum of twice per year (Spring/Fall).

Step 1: Pass the prerequisite examinations (held in spring and fall). All candidates must pass ATIA’s Code of Ethics examination and an English Proficiency examination.

Step 2: Translators who pass the Code of Ethics examination and the English Proficiency examination will write the Translation examination (in the language combination confirmed at registration/payment time and prior to sitting the English Proficiency examination). Interpreters who pass the Code of Ethics examination and the Reading Comprehension for Interpreters examination will then submit their Application Form (see links to specific forms here).

To register for an exam, visit our events page. Be sure to register prior to the deadline to ensure your spot is reserved. For questions, contact ATIA today.

ATIA has adjusted the admission requirements for Associate Membership!

If you or someone you know are considering becoming an associate member with ATIA, and you have the following credentials, then you may be permitted to by-pass certain requirements.

  • University graduates with a degree in translation or interpretation in a language combination where the one language is English can become associate members directly upon passing the code of ethics exam and paying the membership dues. Degree must be from a country where English is an official language.
  • Credentials must be assessed by ATIA Board.
  • Degrees and transcripts from overseas will need to be translated by a certified translator if not in English or French.
  • Degrees and transcripts from overseas must be accredited by a recognized Canadian organization such as IQAS or WES.
  • Candidates from a country where English is not an official language will need to pass the editing and /or reading comprehension exam(s).
  • As is true for all associate members, these student associates will have six years in which to apply for certification either by taking the certification exam or by on-dossier application.
